Dr. Leon Igel (pronounced "Eagle") is the chief medical officer for FlyteHealth and an internationally recognized expert in obesity medicine and endocrinological care. He is on faculty in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at Weill Cornell Medicine. He was previously the director of Weill Cornell's West Side division of the Comprehensive Weight Control Center, as well as the former Fellowship Director for Weill Cornell's Obesity Medicine and Obesity Medicine/Bariatric Endoscopy fellowships, focused on training physicians in this subspecialized area of medicine.
Dr. Igel graduated from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine with an M.D. degree with special distinction in Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism. He completed his internal medicine residency at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, where he served as ambulatory chief resident. He subsequently completed a combined Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism fellowship at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and the Hospital for Special Surgery. Dr. Igel is board certified in internal medicine, obesity medicine, and endocrinology, diabetes & metabolism. He has lectured and published broadly on the topics of obesity medicine, pharmacotherapy for the treatment of obesity, medication-induced weight gain, and obesity-associated endocrine conditions. He is a fellow of The Obesity Society (FTOS), and a fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP). Dr. Igel has received numerous awards, most recently being named The American Diabetes Association – Medical Honoree of the Year (2024) in recognition of contributions to the field of endocrinology, and groundbreaking work in diabetes and obesity management.
