Michael Tuggy, MD is a rural family physician in the mountain valley in Winthrop, Washington and a Clinical Professor at the University of Washington School of Medicine. Prior to moving into rural practice, he was the Director of the Swedish Family Medicine –First Hill Residency for 14 years where he practiced full-spectrum family medicine. He is a board-certified family medicine physician. He completed his MD from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, and completed postgraduate training in family medicine at Madigan Army Medical Center. He served for 7 years on active duty in the US Army including service in Iraq and Kuwait during the first Gulf Wars. In the past 6 years, he led the development of several core curriculum projects – a core procedures curriculum (Procedures Consult and Atlas of Essential Procedures) and the Family Medicine Residency Curriculum Resource where he serves as the senior editor. Dr. Tuggy is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, National Ski Patrol, and the Association of Family Medicine Residency Directors which he led as president in 2013. From that leadership position, he joined the team to develop the strategic plan for family medicine to transform U.S. healthcare through the Family Medicine for America’s Health initiative. From this work, the Primary Care Innovator’s Network was spawned to help businesses and primary care practices develop partnerships based on comprehensive primary care payment for advanced primary care services.
