Dr. Ryan C. Smith is a Research Scientist and Group Lead for the Impaired Driving Research, Evaluation, and Analysis (IDREA) Group at the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute. He specializes in impaired driving research with a focus on field research methodologies, alcohol, other drugs, and advanced vehicle technologies. As a PI or Co-PI, Smith has brought in over $4.5 million in extramural research funds related to these topics. Much of his research focuses specifically on driver impairment related to cannabis, prescription drugs, and over-the-counter drugs. Dr. Smith has over one hundred research contributions including peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and conference presentations related to alcohol and other drugs. This includes chairing symposia on the topics of alcohol and drug abuse at leading national conferences such as the American Psychological Association (APA), Association for Behavior Analysis International (ABAI), and the Association for Psychological Science (APS). He serves as a scientific peer-reviewer for a number of journals including the American Journal of Public Health; American Journal of Preventive Medicine; Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research; Journal of Safety Research; and Neuropsychiatric Disease and Treatment. He is also a member and paper coordinator of the Alcohol, Other Drugs, and Transportation committee of the National Academy of Science’s Transportation Research Board. Dr. Smith holds a Ph.D. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from Virginia Tech. He also holds a Master’s Degree in I/O Psychology and three Bachelor’s degrees in the fields of psychology, sociology, and political science- all from Virginia Tech.
