Dr. Peter Pronovost, MD, PhD, is a globally recognized patient safety advocate, critical care physician, and prolific researcher with over 800 peer-reviewed publications. His groundbreaking work using checklists to reduce catheter-related bloodstream infections has saved countless lives and earned him numerous accolades, including being named one of Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people and receiving a MacArthur Foundation “genius grant” in 2008. Currently, Dr. Pronovost is the chief quality & clinical transformation officer at University Hospitals in Cleveland, where he leads initiatives to enhance the quality of care, manage population health, and reduce healthcare costs.

In his role, Dr. Pronovost has developed new protocols to eliminate defects in value and improve patient outcomes, resulting in a 9% reduction in annual costs per patient within the University Hospitals Accountable Care Organization. He also serves as a professor at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. Previously, he held senior leadership roles at Johns Hopkins Medicine and UnitedHealthcare, focusing on patient safety and clinical strategy. Dr. Pronovost’s contributions extend to advising the World Health Organization and regularly addressing the US Congress on healthcare quality issues. He holds a medical degree, PhD, and completed his training at Johns Hopkins University.
